• For AMA rules,. After playing through about half of Skyward Sword, I realized I fucking hate the Wii remote. More than anything. So I did some looking around and found a way to get Skyward Sword working on the Dolphin emulator with an xbox controller (Windows only as of right now) Let’s get started. 1) Download Dolphin if you haven’t already. 2) Download: x64: x86: 3) Unzip and drag everything into your Dolphin file. This should replace the Dolphin.exe and a few.dll files.
This is basically an unofficial patch that lets dolphin emulate the Wii Motion Plus. 4) Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 if you do not already have it x64: X86: 5) Now that you have patched Dolphin, you can map buttons to your gamepad. If you are using an xbox controller You are in luck. Someone has posted a controller Profile that works perfectly with Skyward Sword! So download and place in Dolphin>User>Config>Profiles>Wiimote (create the Wiimote file if not already there.) Make sure the extension is.ini and not.ini.txt sometimes windows will add.txt to the end of.ini files. 6) Now go to your Wii Remote setup, select Emulated Wiimote and click configure. Make sure your Controller is plugged in/turned on.
Select your controller from the Device drop down. Now Select the Profile we just added (should be 'Zelda SS (temp)4' if you didn't rename it) Make sure that in the 'Extensions' drop down the Nunchuck is selected. GL HF, Let me know if you have any problems and I will try and help your troubleshoot. **Finding/Ripping the game is up to you guys. You can even transfer your save from your Wii over to Dolphin!
(just make sure the copy of SS is from the same region as your save copy. For instance I had a copy of the EU version of SS on Dolphin, and my save game would not read because it came from a US version off my Wii. Hey kon324, to answer your first question: No, you can't just play off the disk. There are only a few specific LG dvd drives that can read Wii games. Hitachi LG GDR-8161b (IDE) Hitachi LG GDR-8162b (IDE) Hitachi LG GDR-8163b (IDE) Hitachi LG GDR-8164b (IDE) Hitachi LG GDR-H10NBLK (SATA) It may take some looking but I'm sure you could find one online.
As for your second question: YES! In the Graphics section there are a few options for Enhancing. Keep in mind that the higher the graphics is set, the buffer your computer will need to be to be able to run the game with no lag/chop. If you keep everything on auto, no matter what it will look WAY better than the Wii. I play on my 50in TV and I can't even begin to tell you how much of a difference playing on Dolphin makes.
This profile is Xinput, which means it should work with PS3, Xbox and Logitech controllers (as long as they are set to Xinput mode). I have not tested it with an Xbox controller, however.
Hey, I wasn't sure where to post this and I am not even sure people are still interested but I pulled out Skyward Sword recently and went through the trouble to making a new profile for my Logitech controller so I thought I'd share it. It might seem a bit strange at first, mapping the sword swings to the A, B, X, and Y buttons but try it out first before forming an opinion. The profile is in the attachment below along with a readme that includes the tutorial I give here. NOTE: Notice the 'version' number on the attached file, there is a changelog included in the readme that explains what I altered and why. Here is a video I made showing the increased accuracy of the profile with sword swings: I saw another control setup on here that gave a tutorial so here is a short tutorial of my own (also included in the readme). Tutorial: The main difference between my profile and others is that I moved the sword controls from the Right Analog stick to the A,B,X, and Y buttons.
I finally got fed up with not being able to make precision attacks when I wanted and this is what I came up with. It seems a bit strange on paper but when I started playing the game it worked out nicely. NOTE: Screenshots may not be up-to-date.
Modifier: Like the control profile in the above link my profile has a “modifier” key which lets the emulator know when you want to make a rapid movement instead of a very slow movement. I mapped the modifier to three keys, Left Shoulder, Left Trigger, and Thumb L (press down on the Left Analog stick). Left Shoulder is also the Z-Targeting button so when you Z-Target to “lock on” to an enemy it will automatically switch to fast-emulation for sword swings. The second (Left Trigger) key is for times when you do not want to Z-Target, such as when flapping your wings during flight, etc. The third binding for the Modifier key is set to Thumb L to make spin attacks easier (see below).
First of all I want to say thank you Muriel for sharing this profile with us. I believe this profile is the best setup for playing SS. It's cool that you can use both the analog sticks and buttons to swing the sword. Using the analog stick is fun and very intuitive while the buttons provide better accuracy. I have completed the game through using this profile. I will say that for the harp using the buttons like you suggest didn't work for me.
I used the analog stick while holding the left trigger modifier. Then I just followed the rhythm of the pulsing circle and it was very easy. Remember that using a real wiimote you want to use large broad stroking motions so using a faster stroke using the modifier is the way to go. Only issue I have is that aiming in first person mode is really finicky as the sensitivity is really high.
Then again I have controller issues when using older versions of Dolphin which we have to use in order to play SS. Heretic 2 1.06 No Cd Patch. Others might not have this issue and it wouldn't be a problem if recent versions of Dolphin still supported emulated wii motion plus. Any problems with sensitivity and controller going crazy on your end? Anyways thanks again.
I love Zelda Skyward Sword. Such a great game. With the Logitech controller that I normally use I would have to be very light on the analog stick to aim and aiming in combat was difficult. I haven't played through the whole game yet, I am just past the waterfall dungeon but the only thing I had to use the real wiimote for (so far) was drawing the circle on the wall. I have heard from others that had no problem with drawing it though. I just started using my PS3 controller however, since it can be used as xinput (as well as the Xbox controller) and the analog sticks on the PS3 controller are a little tighter and easier to use than my Logitech 710 wireless. Overall, most of the game seems as enjoyable with a controller as it was with a real wiimote, but that doesn't say much.
Honestly I hated using the wiimote, the swinging is awkward and my arm gets tired after 15 minutes of play. Its such a beautiful game graphically and the characters are great I just find myself silently cursing Nintendo for not having two control schemes (one motion and one controller).
It was a lack of creativity on their part and not an act of creativity, in my opinion. I'm glad you like the profile though and thanks for play testing! Ya that part where you have to draw on the wall to enter the water temple was a real pain in the ass. It took me over what seemed like one hundred tries before I figured it out. Because you have to press and hold A when you draw, I deleted the first entry of the controller settings page of the rotate column which was messing things up as it was invoking a pitching motion.
Not sure if that was the issue exactly but luckily it took me only a couple of tries after that and it worked. Just have to draw slowly and patiently.
Came across some part where you have to draw on the wall for hearts which I am assuming I was supposed to draw a heart shape, my drawing looked nothing like a heart but I still got it lol. Those parts seem much more forgiving. I have a PS3 controller as well.
I wonder how it would compare to my xbox 360 controller. I can't believe how much I enjoy this game considering I never got very far into TWP, WW or OoT. The last Zelda game I finished was A Link to the Past. I agree about the controls. The game was originally being built to use button controls but they scrapped that to add in the wii motion + controls late in the games development. Would have been nice if they had kept both control schemes in the game.
Oh well perhaps when they re-release the HD remaster in one of nintendo's future consoles they will re-work the controls. Thanks again. Update: In your in your instruction guide you say it's Left Trigger plus Left thumbstick to steer when flying the bird but it's actually Right Trigger plus left thumbstick. You say it's Left and Right thumbsticks to do a spiral attack under water but it actually just click Left Thumbstick.
Found this tidbit in another thread. Never tried it myself but could be useful. 'I know I'm late to the party here, but if you get stuck on the eyes in skyward sword an easy way to get around them is turn sideways at a 90 degree angle to them and do the vertical flip spin sword attack 3 times.
Much easier than trying to configure the controls to make the large circles with the motion+ emulation. ' Another alternative from the same thread. Press modifier button, and yaw left or right. In the part where you have to solve the 3-D key door puzzle, when you almost have it and the lock flashes yellow because the piece is not quite properly aligned.
Just let go of Right Shoulder and click again and it should activate. Charging the Bow.
Just press and hold Right Shoulder. There is an alternate way to do it on the Wii but it's not necessary. Leaping on the ladder and vines is easy. Just press the direction you want to go and keep tapping the Left Trigger. The Mine Cart controls similar to the Bird.
Right Trigger plus Left control stick to steer. Left Trigger plus up on Right control stick to jump. Left on Dpad to slow down. Sky Diving is really tricky. Again Right Trigger plus Left control to steer.
Up on Right control makes Link move towards bottom of screen while pressing down on stick makes link angle forward but press too hard and he goes into a vertical dive. The level design of the ship is just amazing. Nintendo did a great job! I had troubles with that Boss however. I know what to do and how the controls work but the game just didn't want to do what I wanted for some reason.
Pretty tough fight for me. Almost cheated on the part where you have to draw on the wall to get to the waterfall as mentioned previously. I heard someone say they used a wall hack to get through that part. Decided to enable a couple of cheats.
Disabled the notification every time you pick up an item or bug and made text speed instant. Both have made the game immensely more enjoyable to play. Hope that helps.
